Slightly Inappropriate E-mail

1 Mar

I love books. I order quite a few of them from amazon.com. I often receive e-mails from them, recommending new books to me. But I’ve never gotten one like this before.

Dear Amazon.com Customer,

We’ve noticed that customers who have purchased The Silver Spoon by Phaidon Press also purchased books by Annie Cheney. For this reason, you might like to know that Annie Cheney’s Body Brokers : Inside America’s Underground Trade in Human Remains will be released on March 14, 2006. You can pre-order your copy at a savings of 32% by following the link below.

Maybe it’s just me, but I found this RIOTOUSLY funny!

I think the irony lies in the fact that, yes, I am the type of person that would own both of these books. I was a Physical Anthropology major in college, my mentor professor was an occasional forensics expert for the FBI, so, you can see why I might actually be interested in Body Brokers. But, I feel that this cannot be the norm. There can’t be thousands of people out there interested both in Italian cooking and human osteology… I can’t come up with a good explanation, but I have a hunch that, somehow, The New Yorker is to blame.

Enjoy.

No matter how stupid Amazon’s email AI is, “Body Brokers” is a highly recommended read. A brilliant piece of investigation. But how exactly it ends up with sidewise “Silver Spoon” remains a new issue to investigate, who cooked this?!
