My mom came over to the house on Saturday (the rest of the family, too).
We ate ribs and cake and salad, drank wine and talked and talked and talked. We celebrated my step-sister’s birthday, my nephew’s birthday, my birthday and an early Father’s Day. It was fun.
And as I was showing everyone around the garden, I realized that this year I’m gardening for pretty.
There’s the pretty little walk that Isaac made between our tomato beds (and, fingers crossed, pretty little tomatoes in a few months).
There’s the peas.
There’s the leafy greens.
The fruit.
The Rs (radishes and raab).
And of course the nature it’s surrounded by.

It looks, fantastic, Ann. What I would do for that lush green-ness, especially knowing that it won’t likely rain again here until November.
I think veggie gardens are innately beautiful. There are always so many textures and colors, and sometimes we end up with color/texture combinations that we wouldn’t necessarily consider in a non-edible bed.
Have you ever grown sweet potatoes? I’m growing them for the first time this year, and they are lovely, lovely plants.

Christina — Green. Yeah, I know we’re lucky with the green, but looking forward to seeing the Southern California reds and browns this weekend!! I’ve never grown sweet potatoes for food, I had some decorative ones last year, and hooo doggie you’re right. They’re so pretty!

Ann, I do have some pots, just jealous of the ability to have so much more. We have a front yard (or sidewalk garden) consisting of three big wine barrel pots with two tomatoes, six scarlet runners, thai and sweet basil, oregano, thyme, a jalapeno, and yellow sweet peppers. In the back yard I have a pot with serranos, parsley and mint, we had lettuces but the aphids ate them right quickly. (For that matter too, we had cilantro, but it bolted and then died after a few very hot days.) And then I’m trying one of those monster topsy turveys that has two tomatoes (a purple cherokee, and a Mr. Stripey), two habeneros, and sage. The jury is still out on the topsy turvey, but the other plants are doing great.
Those are some great photos. I liked the detail of the water drops on the peas. I would have to admit that I just don’t take the time to normally notice something like that.
An inspiration! I’m still not gardening for pretty these days, but close! Then again, it all looks pretty to me, if a little sloppy!
